Blood Clot Risk Tied to Birth Control Pills according to FDA

Comments Off

Today, it was confirmed that several new birth control drugs including Yaz, the Ortho Evra patch and the contraceptive Nuvaring, appear to increase the risk of dangerous blood clots more than older medications according to federal health regulators.

It was found that women taking Yaz are at significantly more risk of developing blood clots than those who are taking older birth control drugs. This was discovered after a study performed by the Food and Drug Administration reviewed the medical history of more than 800,000 woman between 2001 and 2007 who were prescribed various forms of birth control.

According to the FDA, women using the Ortho Erva patch or the vaginal ring, Nuvaring, are also at risk of higher complications.

In December, the FDA will reconvene to further discuss the severity of these complications, and review recent studies linking newer birth control pills to blood clot risks as well.
